Aikido in Reno

Many of our Jiu Jitsu students, both adults and kids, began their search for martial arts training by seeking out Aikido. How similar is Aikido to Jiu Jitsu?

Let’s explore that question.

Executive 90 Second Summary

  • Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, when practised correctly, is everything Aikido purports to be but better.
  • Brazilian Jiu Jitsu like Aikido, seeks to utilise leverage to use an aggressor’s force against them.
  • Brazilian Jiu Jitsu’s effectiveness has been proven in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Aikido has never worked effectively against live, resisting opponents due to its lack of practice against resisting opponents. In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, sparring is actively encouraged to test your newly acquired skills.

For anyone who is interested in exploring the journey of those who began in Aikido and transitioned into other martial arts, Sensei Rokas was a multiple degree black belt in Aikido who eventually trained with SBG and became a competitive MMA fighter, closing his Aikido school and calling out its effectiveness. While fighting in MMA is not going to be everyone’s journey, and many people simply take up BJJ instead, Rokas offers some valuable insights into why so many people begin in Aikido and then leave it. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCazByhbmztoIg6ZKeI25PGw

Whether it is for kids or adults, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the real deal for those wanting to effectively use someone’s resistance against them.

The response was immediate.

Within weeks, families were joining specifically because of the program. Parents started bringing toddlers, preschoolers, and homeschool-aged children. We quickly reached the point where we needed additional childcare support because so many families wanted to participate.

Some parents were so excited about the opportunity that they offered to help pay for the babysitter themselves.

Others volunteered coloring books, activities, and ideas to make the experience even better for the children.

What started as a simple solution quickly became something much bigger.

It became a community.
