Choosing the Right Martial Arts Academy for your Child: Safety, trust, and the SBG Reno Difference

By Jessica Locke, Owner of SBG Reno and Mom

As both a parent and the owner of SBG Reno, I understand that when we choose a martial arts academy for our children, we’re not just looking for good coaching — we’re entrusting someone with their safety, confidence, and personal growth. That’s why the recent news about a local martial arts instructor in Reno being sentenced to prison for serious crimes was both heart breaking and infuriating. It’s a painful reminder that as parents, we must be careful about where we send our kids and who we allow to mentor them. At SBG Reno, we’ve always built our program on the principle that coaching children is a privilege that comes with deep responsibility. We go far beyond teaching martial arts — we create a safe, structured, and positive environment that helps kids grow into strong, confident, and kind young people. Here’s what that looks like in practice:

  • Comprehensive Safety Training: Every SBG Reno staff member maintains current CPR and AED certifications. Emergencies are rare, but we believe being prepared is non-negotiable.
  • Professional, Vetted Coaches: Many of our coaches are active or former law enforcement officers, teachers, and community leaders. They understand what it means to be role models and to hold themselves to the highest standards of conduct.
  • Transparent, Family-Friendly Environment: Parents are always welcome to watch classes. We encourage open communication between families and our coaching team — no secrets, no closed doors.
  • A Proven Curriculum for Growth: Our Growing Gorillas program helps kids build focus, discipline, and resilience through age-appropriate martial arts training. It’s designed not just to create better athletes, but better humans.
  • A Trusted Part of the Community: SBG has been part of families’ lives for decades, with a global reputation for professionalism, respect, and care.

As a mom, I know how important it is to have peace of mind when your child steps onto the mat. At SBG Reno, our promise is simple — your child will be safe, supported, and surrounded by people who genuinely care about their wellbeing. Martial arts can be one of the most transformative experiences in a young person’s life. Let’s make sure that experience happens in a place built on trust, integrity, and love for our community. If you’d like to learn more about our children’s programs or visit the academy, we’d love to welcome you and your family.
